What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy is an osteopathic technique that connects the whole spine from cranium to sacrum. The understanding is that the optimal condition occurs when the body structure is set to its natural state of balance allowing the whole organism to function to its highest potential.
The technique brings a state of deep relaxation where the entire parasympathetic nervous system relaxes, muscles release along the spine and the pulsation of the cerebrospinal fluid can reset. In this way the bio-electrical function of the nervous system allows energy to flow smoothly in turn allowing healing to take place.
What is involved?
The person lies on their back (loose comfortable clothing is advised) on the therapy table and prepares to enjoy 60-90 minutes of total relaxation.
The therapist uses a light touch technique and is trained to feel interruptions in the cerebrospinal pulse that indicate where there might be tension or limitations, they then bring the person into a place of relaxation before using a number of techniques working on the area of discomfort or pain.
The person will feel deeply content, relaxed physically, mentally and emotionally often accompanied by a sense of lightness and ease, in this state healing is promoted. Using gentle pressure (less than that of a coin) the structure is encouraged to return to its 'best fit' structural alignment.
Who can benefit from a treatment?
Craniosacral therapy benefits a wide range of maladies ranging from:
. acute physical pain or discomfort resulting from an injury or a chronic condition: neck pain/tension, Temporo Mandibular Joint (jaw) pain including clenching, grinding, headaches including migraines, tension headaches, lower back pain/ache, sinus discomfort, morning sickness.
. mental or emotional distress such as anxiety, insomnia, depression, dizziness (BPPV), frustration, stress, anger and is effective for children, adolescents and adults alike.
. infants also can benefit from a treatment if they had a traumatic delivery and are suffering from colic, difficulty sleeping, excessive crying (distress), digestive discomfort. Mothers can also benefit.
